My Collection!

I talked to Gavin Grant on the phone today. Gavin Grant and Kelly Link, besides sending me wigs and chocolate, edit Small Beer Press. They're publishing my collection of short stories, Mothers and Other Monsters, in June. So Gavin and I talked about what order the stories go in and we agreed Ancestor Money should be first. And he thought the two big long ones, "The Cost To Be Wise" and "Nekropolis" should be in the middle. It's actually fun to try to decide what order they should go in.

Here's a list of the stories, but the order isn't set yet.

Ancestor Money
Interview: On Any Given Day
Lincoln Train
In the Air
Oversite
Cost To Be Wise
Nekropolis
Wicked
Presence
The Wicked Stepmother
The Beast
Laika Comes Back Safe
Frankenstein’s Daughter

A couple of them are on line. Think of it as the equivalent of a free sample.

We did kick it around, but the collection is already at almost 90,000 words, and there is the faint possibility I'll actually finish a new short story--very faint, but Gavin and Kelly are eternal optimists.

Kelly pointed out I've been publishing stories for almost seventeen years. Which is kind of amazing to me.

How nice it must be to have an editor ask your preferences regarding the order of the stories. I can only imagine.

One could argue that "The Cost to be Wise," "Nekropolis," and "Interview: On Any Given Day" could be omitted because they are chunks of later novels. This would leave room for "Protection," "Eight-Legged Story," and a story to be named (perhaps to be written).

Of course, the novel that has grown from "Interview" is not yet finished, but think what a spur to completion this would be.
